Flavoured Cigarettes a threat to children: Roxon
Federal minister for Health, Nicola Roxon said she would speak to her State and Territory counterparts about actions to address the sale of flavoured Cigarettes.
Federal minister for Health, Nicola Roxon said she would speak to her State and Territory counterparts about actions to address the sale of flavoured Cigarettes. Ms Roxon said while smoking rates are dropping in Australia, flavoured Cigarettes potentially open up a dangerous new avenue to attract children to smoking. “I’m extremely concerned that just when we’re starting to make some good progress with young people in terms of smoking rates that we now see tobacco companies trying to entice children and young people to smoking.” 1 in 3 Australian high school students have tried Cigarettes and 50 Australians die each day from tobacco. “We know that tobacco kills.” “We know that over 50 Australians every day still die from the results of smoking.” “We must stop young people from taking up this killer habit,” Ms Roxon said. The Health Minister said banning the products would not be out of the question. “I don’t believe that flavoured Cigarettes should be able to be marketed to children…we need to do something about it – we’re worried about it.”
